MANTECH BOD – Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)

MANTECH BOD – Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)

Automated BOD analysis with MANTECH instruments.

Through the Canadian company MANTECH, TM-Autolab supplies highly competitive instruments for automated analysis of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD).

These systems offer automatic addition of seed water, dilution water, and washing between samples. With the PC-BOD software, the method can be customized so that reading speed, flags, and calculations match specific method requirements. The system continuously tracks incubation time and notifies the user which racks need to be read each day. It couldn’t be easier!

MANTECH’s BOD systems are available in two main rack sizes, holding either 23 or 11 bottles per rack. Larger versions are also available, supporting 54, 72, or 90 bottles. This allows users to select the system size best suited to their sample volume. The machine supports both 300 mL and 60 mL bottles, making it compatible with bottles already in use in most labs.

The BOD instruments are available with two types of oxygen sensors. The most common is the original Clark cell, which uses an oxygen-permeable membrane and an electrochemical cell. These probes have been on the market for decades and offer fast readings—around 30 seconds on average for a stable measurement.

Alternatively, we now offer BOD instruments with optical oxygen sensors. These meet all international standards and are approved for oxygen measurement. Unlike Clark cells, the optical sensors are virtually maintenance-free. There is no membrane to replace; instead, the sensor cap is changed about once a year. These sensors have a reading time of about 45–60 seconds, making them slightly slower than Clark cells, but they are ideal for users with smaller sample volumes who still need to perform BOD analysis.

We strongly recommend that receiving laboratories use synthetic seed water as much as possible to ensure the most stable results.
